A Health Savings Account (HSA) is a tiered rate, interest-bearing checking account designed to give individuals enrolled in a high-deductible health plan (HDHP) control over saving for and the management of health care costs. 
 
To be eligible to open an HSA, you must: 
  • Be covered under a qualified HDHP
  • Not be covered under another plan that is not an HDHP *
  • Not be eligible to be claimed as a dependent on another individual's tax return
  • have HDHP coverage on the first day of the month during the month that the account is opened
  • Not be enrolled in Medicare
